Tapio Pitkäranta
The Agentic Probe: The Instrument of Agentic Discovery & Engineering
Tapio Pitkäranta presents agentic probes as tangible experiments that help people clarify problems and explore solutions. Examples from a probe factory and a healthcare process exercise show how faster implementation can move the bottleneck toward ideas, orchestration and validation.

Make discovery tangible Three takeaways from Tapio Pitkäranta at SDLCAI 2026: 1. Give people a probe they can inspect and challenge. 2. Test the understanding of the problem as well as the solution. 3. As building accelerates, ideas, orchestration and validation matter more. Key points
Paraphrased from the talk. Follow each timestamp to hear the argument in context.
Discovery and engineering address different questions, and their boundary can overlap.
2:18–4:51A tangible probe gives people something to react to when their intent is hard to specify in advance.
12:34–14:07Probes can test the understanding of a problem as well as demonstrate a possible solution.
12:34–14:35Scaling implementation shifts constraints toward idea generation, orchestration and human validation.
15:35–17:48Agentic search can inform alternative process designs, but imagined healthcare workflows remain exploratory proposals.

The talk in context
Tapio Pitkäranta separates upstream discovery from downstream engineering while treating their boundary as overlapping rather than fixed. In joint research with Leena Pitkäranta, an agentic probe is a tangible artefact that people can inspect, reject and refine. It might be software, a simulation or another representation of a problem or possible solution. Tapio describes workshops where increasing demand moved the bottleneck from generating ideas to implementing them, leading to a small factory in which agents produced probes from submitted requests. He then outlines work in progress using agentic search to map healthcare processes and imagine alternatives. The point of these examples is to support conversation and validation, rather than to treat generated proposals as deployed solutions. As implementation gets faster, deciding what to investigate and judging whether the result satisfies real constraints become more prominent parts of the work.
Context & qualifications
- The healthcare examples are exploratory work in progress and imagined process alternatives, rather than demonstrated clinical outcomes.
